5 Classic House Music Tracks That Defined the Genre

By the time that house music began to make its way out of Chicago and filter into the dance scenes of other major cities like New York and London, there were already several names that were associated with what would come to be known as classic house music. To be sure, Frankie Knuckles, the DJ and producer who was most directly responsible for creating the house genre had more than a few titles under his belt. However, there are some other artists whose names are inextricably linked with the commercial growth of house. Let's take a look at some of the classic house tracks that helped define a generation of club goers.

1. Frankie Knuckles - The Whistle Song. Released in 1991, and helping to lead the surge of house music that was knocking on the door of mainstream chart success, this flute-based track was mellow, had a deep groove and was eminently danceable. All of the ingredients that would come to define house in the 90's were there - the bass line, the simple drum beat - providing the foundation for hundreds of house tracks to follow.

2. Mr. Fingers - Washing Machine. In 1986, Washing Machine was a revolutionary track that was one of the first to explore the possibilities of the 'acid' baseline, a twisting sound that would worm its way into the brains of partiers. The rhythm track was based off of an 808 drum machine, providing the groundwork for a lot of the experimental acid house that would become more prominent as time went on.

3. M/A/R/R/S - Pump Up The Volume. A list of classic house music wouldn't be complete without this entry from the production team of A R Kane and Colourbox. 'Pump Up The Volume' is most notable for its heavy use of sampling, and it was a pioneer in this respect. Cut onto vinyl in 1987, the track crossed over onto the mainstream charts and became one of the most recognizable classic house music tunes. It was also the only release from this one-off collaboration.

4. Technotronic - Pump Up The Jam. Completely unrelated to its namesake above, 'Pump Up The Jam' smashed through barriers in 1989 to become a huge pop hit. Combining a searing vocal with hard-hitting synth lines and an unbeatable bass track, Technotronic scored a number two spot on British charts and a Platinum record for the accompanying album in the United States. This was a huge accomplishment for house music and helped to legitimize the genre heading into the 1990's.

5. Madonna - Vogue. Ever the chameleon, pop star Madonna hitched her wagon to the rising house star and secured an enormous hit that further mainstreamed dance music. The song contained many of the drum and rhythm elements found in early classic house music, but it combined them with a more pop-oriented song structure and a dynamic, changing vocal. Interestingly, 'Vogue' was a soundtrack release meant to accompany the film 'Dick Tracy' in 1990.

Discovering New (And Old) Music

When I began to seriously study music (at the tender age of 17) I met an eclectic mix of people. There were the long haired leather clad metal heads, the peace loving flower power hippies, gangster/hip-hop r&b rappers, bubble gum popsters and mods complete with Beatle haircuts. All had varied tastes, but with one thing in common - we were all undeniably in love with music.

It was during these years of studying, I discovered how narrow my music taste was. In my extreme ignorance, I thought listening to The Beatles and Jimi Hendrix was enough (of course they are amazing), I didn't think I needed to listen to any other bands/artists. A good friend of mine recommended I listen to Led Zeppelin, yes I'd heard the name before I said, but didn't think I would enjoy them. HOW WRONG I WAS!

After listening to Communication Breakdown and Babe I'm Gonna Leave You, I was hooked. I bought every single Led Zeppelin album and played them religiously. My ears had opened musically and my ignorance began to fade away. Curiosity struck and I found myself wondering where Led Zeppelin's inspiration had come from.

Much research later and I had discovered several artists, previously unbeknownst to me. They included Robert Johnson, Willie Dixon, Otis Rush, Howlin Wolf and Bo Diddley. Tantalizing my musical taste-buds, my research stumbled across Jazz (I knew Blues and Jazz were related) and I soon became a fan of Ella Fitzgerald, Billie Holiday and Louis Armstrong.

Looking back, what's amazed me is how opened minded I became once I gave other bands/artists a chance. Had I been reluctant to listen to Led Zeppelin (or any other artist/band), I wouldn't have discovered such other wonderful music.

Since becoming musically liberated, I have discovered many songs/compositions that I really enjoy (some which I never would have dreamt of listening to before). Of course, it is not just classic rock, blues and jazz I listen to now, I will always give any piece of music a chance.

So my point in writing this article is to say don't just sit there and listen to Red Hot Chili Peppers (although they are pretty funky) find out who they are inspired by and give them a listen. Expand yourself musically, go to your local music store and buy a CD from a completely different genre that you normally listen to. Actively listen to the songs, if you enjoy them great, if not at least you gave them a chance.

Don't limit yourself when you could be discovering much new (and old) brilliant music.

The History of Rap and Hip Hop Music

The origin of hip-hop can be traced back as far as the ancient tribes in Africa. Rap has been compared with the chants, drumbeats and foot-stomping African tribes performed before wars, the births of babies, and the deaths of kings and elders. Historians have reached further back than the accepted origins of hip-hop. It was born as we know it today in the Bronx, cradled and nurtured by the youth in the low-income areas of New York City.

Fast-forward from the tribes of Africa to the ghettos of Kingston, Jamaica in the late sixties. The impoverished of Kingston gathered together in groups to form DJ conglomerates. They spun roots and culture records and communicated with the audience over the music. At the time, the DJ's comments weren't as important as the quality of the sound system and its ability to get the crowd moving. Kool Herc grew up in this community before he moved to the Bronx.

During the late sixties, reggae wasn't popular with New Yorkers. As a DJ, Kool Herc spun rhythm and blues records to please his party crowd. But, he had to add his personal touch. During the breaks, Herc began to speak to his audience as he had learned to do in Jamaica. He called out, the audience responded, and then he pumped the volume back up on the record. This call and response technique was nothing new to this community who'd been reared in Baptist and Methodist churches where call and response was a technique used by the speakers to get the congregation involved. Historians compare it to the call and response performed by Jazz musicians and was very much a part of the culture of Jazz music during the renaissance in Harlem.

Herc's DJ style caught on. His party's grew in popularity. He began to buy multiple copies of the same albums. When he performed his duties as a DJ, he extended the breaks by using multiple copies of the same records. He chatted, as it is called in dance hall, with his audience for longer and longer periods.

Others copied Herc's style. Soon a friendly battle ensued between New York DJs. They all learned the technique of using break beats. Herc stepped up the game by giving shout-outs to people who were in attendance at the parties and coming up with his signature call and response. Other DJs responded by rhyming with their words when they spoke to the audience. More and more DJs used two and four line rhymes and anecdotes to get their audiences involved and hyped at these parties.

One day, Herc passed the microphone over to two of his friends. He took care of the turn table and allowed his buddies to keep the crowd hyped with chants, rhymes and anecdotes while he extended the breaks of different songs indefinitely. This was the birth of rap as we know it.

Hip-hop has evolved from the days of the basement showdowns to big business in the music industry. In the seventies and eighties, the pioneers and innovators of the rap record was the DJ. He was the guy who used his turntable to create fresh sounds with old records. Then, he became the guy who mixed these familiar breaks with synthesizers to produce completely new beats. Not much has changed in that aspect of hip-hop. The guy who creates the beat is still the heart of the track. Now, we call him the producer. Even though some DJs work as producers as well as DJs (quite a few start out as DJs before they become producers), today's title "DJ" doesn't carry the same connotative meaning it did in the eighties. Today's hip-hop producer performs the same tasks as the eighty's DJ.

Would you like to learn how to make rap beats and hip hop beats? You can with our free beat making tutorials. We walk you through what software you need, how to setup a beat and much more. We will even show you have to get a free rap beat maker so you can start making your own rap beats now.

New Yo Gotti Mixtapes 2010

There are plenty of new Yo Gotti mixtapes that people like to have in their collection of underground rap music. The latest mixtape that came out in 2010 has created quite a stir both on the internet and in the streets across the United States. He has done a series of tapes called "CM" which is an acronym for the subject matter on the tapes. The first CM tape came out back in the early 2000's and is considered a collector's item by many fans. Although he put a lot of time, effort, and hard work into the creation of his project, he did not expect people to like it as much as they did.

Eventually, most of his CM mixtapes were re-released as albums instead of just tapes. Even though they retained the deejay shout outs, they still sounded better than the majority of music that was coming out at the time. He has continued the series and done work with hip hop moguls like DJ Drama, DJ Smallz, and more. When he first released these, there were other artists in his home state of Tennessee already experiencing success and fame. The group Triple 6 Mafia, also known as Three 6 Mafia, was making a lot of music for the streets at the time and their sound was well received due to the rawness in their lyrics and production from DJ Paul.

The community of Northern Memphis though, was hungry for a new sound as well. This is how Yo Gotti got promoted to the next level. In fact, he put out mixed tapes whenever he was not busy working on his next album. Some of his legendary material included the tapes entitled "I Told U So" and "Pyrex King." Each of these projects was available at designated distributors on the internet, and within a matter of a couple years, they went on to be downloaded thousands of times. Far before the internet was used to promote him as an artist, he promoted himself independently.

He sold hard copies of his mixtapes and albums to anyone that wanted one. People that he frequently saw and talked to promoted their friend and Yo Gotti because they wanted to see him succeed. These days, he still goes back to the neighborhood from which he grew up to encourage the youth that they can do anything if they put their mind to it. He had to overcome a lot of personally challenging situations to increase his fan base. It seems as though whenever more new Yo Gotti mixtapes come out, they further increase his popularity. For this artist, all of the success he has experienced is very well deserved; he earned it.

If you are interested in Yo Gotti mixtapes then chances are that you will also like to watch some Yo Gotti freestyles.

Free Piano Sheet Music in the New Age Style

So, you're looking for free piano sheet music. But not just any kind. You want New Age piano sheet music. But it's sadly lacking in both online and offline locations. Until now. You see, I love New Age piano music. Spent most of my adult life creating and playing it.

And to tell you the truth, I'm disappointed in the complete lack of resources for this genre. The classical music world has literally millions of pieces of sheet music. And jazz? You can find thousands of lead sheets, written sheets, and complete pieces for piano available. And New Age? Forget about it.

Of course there is sheet music for New Age piano. Hal Leonard has some as do other music publishers. But it was mostly published back in the 1980's when New Age piano hit it's peak of popularity. Where can you find the new stuff? Unfortunately, there isn't much being produced.

My search of the internet revealed a few artists who create New Age piano sheet music but most of them charge for it. Nothing wrong with that. They're trying to make money doing what they love and they should get paid. But what about the beginning pianist who loves New Age piano music and just wants to play a few beginners pieces? Where should they go?

Now you can find free piano sheet music in the New Age style. I've created a blog where I'll post fresh sheet music regularly. And best of all...it's free! Why am I doing this? Because I love the genre and I want more people to get interested in it. I know many of you enjoy this style of music but are a little ashamed to say you like New Age piano. I understand. No one I know likes the term "new age" but we're stuck with it. At least it lets us know the kind of music we're playing.

Edward Weiss is a pianist/composer and webmaster of Quiescence Music's online piano lessons. He has been helping students learn how to play piano in the New Age style for over 14 years and works with students in private, in groups, and now over the internet. Many of you may not know what MySpace is and also the reasons why this website has become so popular: MySpace is a social networking website which offers an exciting and interactive user submitted network of friends, groups, photos, blogs, personal profiles and of course, music and videos. Statistically speaking, MySpace is nowadays the world's sixth most popular website in any language which is an incredible thing if you take in consideration that in the present, there are about 10 billion websites on the Internet.

Napster Vs eMusic- My Search For The Best Music Download Service

With the number of U.S. music fans downloading music online increasing by double digits yearly it's become obvious that downloading is the new way to do music.

For sure there have been, and in fact continues to be issues with legal-vs-illegal but follow this very simple guideline and you don't have to be concerned about the feds showing up at your door.

The bottom line here is just like in the real world DO NOT copy your music and sell or give those copies away to anyone. That's where the file sharers go wrong.

It's that simple.

With that often misunderstood bit of information cleared up I'm now going to contrast and compare a couple of the better and yes, perfectly legal online music download services.

Two of the best music download services I've had the opportunity to try out are eMusic and Napster.

What are the best features of each service?

Napster: Despite it's rocky past the new Napster is a perfectly legal music download site and their full library of digital music, [over 2 million songs] is completely free to listen to. You only pay if you decide to download a song or two to your computer, iPod or other MP3 Player. And Napster has a variety of subscription options to choose from which means you're sure to find a plan that's right for you. Most users will be impressed with the overall depth and breadth of the Napster catalog. Very few searches turn up no results.

eMusic: All the tunes available through eMusic are legitimately licensed from record labels and artists, so you don't have to worry about a midnight visit from the authorities here either. eMusic is now advertising that they have over 1,000,000 high quality MP3 files from 1,200 independent music labels. The collection is mostly filled out in the rock genre, but they also have an outstanding assortment of jazz and blues, as well as a surprisingly large selection of world music. I found the MP3 music downloads available through eMusic were of the highest quality.

What are the performance highlights of each service?

Both Napster and eMusic seem to be built for use by those with broadband connections. Neither one of them says so explicitly but it's pretty clear. Besides, downloading files as large as even small music files is best done with a high speed internet connection.

How easy are these services to use?

Again both, Napster and eMusic offers a freely downloadable application for use in conjunction with their service. Both are just a few mouse clicks to download and could not be simpler to install. Each user interface is of course completely different from the other but both can be easily learned upon spending a few minutes playing with it.

What about value for the money, which is better?

Napster: Offers three levels of membership and service. At the minimal, free level, members can stream almost any track in the Napster catalog up to 5 times each. If you're interested in downloading and having unlimited listening capability you'll pay $9.95 per month. With either of these levels you'll also have the option of purchasing a song outright for .99 each. If you use your music in conjunction with an iPod or other portable device it's $14.95 per month to fill your device with unlimited downloads.

Throughout the Napster site at all levels of membership you have the ability to freely listen to :30 second samples of songs.

eMusic: Has three levels of membership as well. For $9.99 per month you get up to 40 downloads, for $14.99 you get 65, and for $19.99 per month you get 90 downloads. These are high quality MP3 downloads and are on a per month basis, and do not rollover. To borrow a term from the cell phone industry.

So which is better?

The million dollar question. I have to say it really depends on how you use and listen to music. With Napster your music is tied to your computer unless you purchase the track or entire CD outright at .99 per song. This differs greatly form eMusic where with either service level you actually download MP3 files so you do have the option of burning CD's more freely.

I really like several things about each service but mainly with Napster the sheer size of their catalog is very enticing, and with eMusic being able to download burnable MP3's is certainly a desirable feature.

Like I said, I guess it just comes down to what's important to you in determining which service is right and will work best for you.

I've given you a point from which to start your thinking process here. For complete information on the eMusic download service goto [http://www.smoothlee.com/emusic.htm] now.

The Contribution of Parachute Band to Christian Music

Christian music helped to spread the Gospel to all continents of the world. In the present context, it helps fill the hearts of the believers with joy, hope and salvation. Christian music bands exist all over the world, but some have made their mark both as stage performers and producers of impeccable music albums. The name of Parachute band of New Zealand rushes into our mind when we think of Christian Music.

Parachute Band got its name from the annual Parachute Festival of New Zealand. The band came into existence in 1995 when Parachute Music, a Christian organization of New Zealand, brought together five leading musicians of that time to lead the worship services during the festivities. It is diversified from just a stage-performing group and started collecting and composing Christian songs and making albums out of them.

The original members left in 2006 making way for a youthful group of musicians. The band has reached unprecedented growth levels during the post 2006 period. But I do not mean that the first stage was inferior in any way. In fact, the pre-2006 musicians made the it famous across all the continents. The new bunch is building upon what the older members did.

The band has become famous through their mind blowing but meaningful songs. These songs are not only good to be played at churches, but can be listened to in the privacy of your bedroom, car or anywhere you like. After all, faith is a matter that is close to everyone's heart. Listening to Parachute music can instill love for god, faith, charity and peace.

Parachute Band has stuck to gospels and scriptures while composing songs while many other bands have strayed for making easy money. Money is only a secondary thing here. The most important self-professed duty of the band is to spread the message of joy and harmony. This is the reason why the band is being invited all over the world to do stage performances and lead worship services at the most prominent churches of US and Europe.

The group has so far produced eleven albums and I am sure that more are on the anvil. The present set of musicians has brought out three albums, Technicolor, Roadmaps and Revelations and Losing Sleep. It has the expertise and infrastructure to play before huge crowds. Youngsters and old timers equally enjoy the guitar-based songs of the band for both its musical quality as well as the content.

The efforts of Parachute Band to promote the Gospel through its songs have not gone unnoticed. The number of awards and positions won by the band testifies this fact. Some of its songs remained at the top echelons of US music charts for long periods. It has been awarded Peoples Choice award of 2008 and three New Zealand Music Awards. There are many more to mention, but the band is not resting on its laurels.

The band toured Africa, Asia, Europe and Americas in 2007 spreading the word of god and proclaiming His love. Parachute Band's genre of music was liked wherever they went and new invitations are pouring in. But the band still stands on its moorings, which are, among other things, soulful music and Word of God.

Southern Gospel Music

Gospel music is generally believed to have come from African American slaves. It was a way of expressing faith and praises through joyful music so very much distinctive of them. Most gospel music contains some downtrodden themes that can stir different emotions among its listeners; it has a passion that can be traced back to the slave's willful creation of their own worship hymns in spite of hard times. If you listen to gospel music carefully, you'll understand the genius in it.

But the whites have also created a gospel music style of their own; the southern gospel music or simply "white gospel." Southern gospel music is believed to have originated in the late 19th century from the white evangelical Americans. Its style, on the other hand, was believed to come from hymns. Typically, southern gospel music includes sparse instrumentation or none at all.

Contemporary Christian music is a fusion genre of southern gospel music and the bluegrass gospel is its subgenre. The latter's mainstream popularity is attributed to its secular artists, including Elvis Presley, and evangelists, like Billy Graham and Jimmy Swaggart. But history has it that southern gospel music has been developed from the Holiness churches that arose in the first decade of the 20th century throughout the south. This phenomenon created new kind of music for this new forms of worship--in addition to those traditional hymns that were created in the 18th and 19th century.

Southern gospel music is called such so as to distinguish it from black gospel. Mostly, southern gospel and its roots are attributed to the published works and "normal schools" of Aldine S. Kieffer as well as Ephraim Ruebush. And like black gospel, southern gospel also has numerous notable artists and performers.

The Twilight Saga - New Moon Review

If you're looking for a review of the New Moon soundtrack, I'm glad you came by.

The thoughts that might be running through your head are probably similar to the thoughts that I had when I first saw the lineup of bands that contributed original music to this soundtrack.

Why would indie bands be willing to contribute to the soundtrack of a teen vampire movie series? I was really surprised to see this, as there's no way in the world I'd ever be interested in watching these movies.

Usually, the list of bands contributing to a soundtrack will match up well with the type of audience a movie draws in. In this case, it seems completely different. I'd more likely expect a lineup that contributed to a show like Gilmore Girls here.

Nonetheless, some of the finest names in indie rock are present on this soundtrack, and we should be grateful for it. While there's absolutely no need to see this movie if New Moon isn't your cup of tea, there's every reason to check this album out if indie rock is your thing.

With big names like Grizzly Bear, Bon Iver, Thom Yorke, Black Rebel Motorcycle Club and others, this is the best compilation CD I've heard since Dark Was the Night came out earlier this year.

There are some truly original compositions on this CD, and many of them would be standout tracks on any of these artists' original albums. That says enough about the quality of this release.

The New Teen Culture - Emo

The newest trend amongst teens, "emo", is quickly increasing in popularity... buy why?

The new trend is all about emotional music and expressing yourself in an individual way, without fear of what others think. It's interesting taking a look at a cultural trend which likes to avoid labels and just be themselves (while being posers). In fact, if you talk to any emo kid they will give you a million-and-one reasons that they are in fact not an emo kid. But don't worry, these kids aren't afraid of labels. They want to be labeled, but they are scared to label themselves. They need the assurance that they look emo, and that you think they are emo.

Emo fashion is exploding. A walk around your average mall will reveal the new, and sometimes disturbing, fashion trend that is sweeping the world. These kids wear tight pants, eyeliner, and colorful shirts with thrift shop accessories. They listen to bands such as Fall out Boy and Dashboard Confessional. Not that their music matters, what matters is this new fashion trend is exploding. But why?

No one knows why guys are so eager to join this trend as it's staple is wearing your sisters pants and make up, while kissing your best guy friend. The girls, I'm sure, like seeing the guys who are not afraid to be labeled (as long as you label them as emo first!) and are not afraid of protecting their sexuality. Guys are just evolving and letting down their sexuality guards to impress the girls.

Regardless of what it is that really attracts them, they are here in big numbers.

If your looking to join this new culture, I would recommend you grab a pair of your sisters jeans, steal some of her makeup, and swing by the nearest thrift shop to pick up your new emo accessories. Than say good buy to your manliness.

The truth about this new culture is that like most all other new music trends, it's never really been about the music. It's all about the look, the fashion, and getting as many friends on MySpace as possible so that you look popular!

Why Mixtapes Should Be Mandatory For New Music Artists

Too many times, I log into iTunes to find the latest "pop" song which tops the general chart in the music store. These songs have a good beat, a good tune, an attractive singer, or some other shallow cue which triggers the general public to click the "Buy" button. When this happens for just one song, it is not so bad. People spend a dollar for a "fun" tune, a tune they will most likely only listen to for a couple of weeks.

What happens when music listeners make the mistake of buying the entire album based on the [supposed] merits of the hit single? Disappointment, for one. When new artists use one song to sell twelve songs, people are bound to be short-changed. The solution: mixtapes. Mixtapes, which are often associated with the hip-hop and rap genre, should be used music-industry wide. This would be good for both artist and consumer.

If the music is quality material, the artist will have shown its new base what they're made of; this will also get talented artists recognized by record labels. Since a decent mixtape can be made for thousands (rather than hundreds of thousands or even millions) of dollars, this could be a viable to alternative to the current cycle. There are plenty of independent labels which serve as the "mixtape makers" of all industries other than rap and hip-hop. But this trend should be more broadly applied (and more often). That way, next time I get sucked into the vortex of a good beat or pretty face, I will be able to pull myself back, realizing all at once how angry I would have been had I spent the ten bucks to get the entire album.
